Hund or be hunted

The Power of Music in The Witcher 3: "Hunt or Be Hunted" and Its Legacy

In the world of video game soundtracks, few compositions stand out as much as the music of The Witcher 3, Wild Hunt. Among the many unforgettable tracks from this critically acclaimed game, one piece that captures the essence of its intense atmosphere and epic scale is "Hunt or Be Hunted" by Marcin Przybyล‚owicz.

As the title suggests, the track conveys the high-stakes hunt at the core of The Witcher 3. The Wild Hunt, a group of ghostly riders led by a powerful and mysterious figure, serves as a constant threat throughout the game. In this track, Przybyล‚owicz's composition echoes the tense, relentless chase that Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist, faces as he embarks on his quest to track down the Wild Hunt and stop them from causing chaos in the world.

The Musical Elements of "Hunt or Be Hunted"

From the very first note, "Hunt or Be Hunted" builds a powerful sense of urgency. The piece seamlessly blends orchestral elements with electronic influences, giving it a timeless yet contemporary feel. The driving percussion and intense strings create a sense of pursuit, while the eerie, atmospheric tones hint at the supernatural nature of the Wild Hunt.

This composition is a perfect example of how music in video games can elevate the storytelling experience. Every beat and chord progression intensifies the feelings of danger, heightening the stakes and drawing players deeper into the game’s world.

The Harpika and "Hunt or Be Hunted"

While "Hunt or Be Hunted" may have been composed for a full orchestra, its haunting melody can still be captured by the Harpika’s harmonic abilities. I have created a very, very simple arrangement—simple because I have not been playing for very long. More experienced Harpika Kalyre players will undoubtedly be able to create a more impressive version on their instrument. But I am not there yet!

I also came across a beautiful performance of this piece played on a tagelharpa (or talharpa) that truly inspired me. You can watch that version here. It's from Ebanisteria Musicale C.M. Ferrari,

The Influence of "Hunt or Be Hunted" in Gaming Culture

The music of The Witcher 3 has had a lasting impact on gaming culture, with "Hunt or Be Hunted" being one of the standout tracks that resonate deeply with fans. The track is more than just a piece of music; it encapsulates the essence of the game’s narrative and the perilous journey of Geralt.

For fans of the series and musicians alike, "Hunt or Be Hunted" is a testament to the power of music in creating a rich, immersive experience. It reminds us that music can evoke emotions and tell a story without words.

Whether you are a fan of The Witcher 3 or simply appreciate the art of music, "Hunt or Be Hunted" is a track that stands out as an iconic example of video game music. Its energy, drama, and timeless quality will continue to resonate long after it has ended.

My Mother Told Me

"My Mother Told Me" is an old Viking song that has gained immense popularity in recent years, partly due to the series Vikings and various modern renditions. This song is based on a passage from the Icelandic saga Krรกkumรกl, an ancient poem attributed to the legendary Viking warrior Ragnar Lothbrok, which is said to contain his final words.

Who was Ragnar Lothbrok?

Ragnar Lothbrok was a semi-legendary Viking hero and warrior, known for his raids on France and England during the 9th century. He is often depicted as a fearless leader who sought glory and adventure. According to the sagas, Ragnar was captured by King ร†lla of Northumbria and executed by being thrown into a pit of snakes, but his legacy lived on through his sons, who sought revenge and continued his conquests.

The meaning of the song

The song tells the story of a young Viking who dreams of adventure, sailing the seas, and earning glory through raids. The lyrics reflect the Viking mentality of honor, bravery, and ambition. The Vikings strongly believed in courage and earning a place in Valhalla through great deeds on the battlefield and at sea.

Common translation of the lyrics:

My mother told me, someday I would buy
galleys, with good oars, sail to distant shores,
stand up high on the prow, noble barque I steer,
steady course to the haven, hew many foe-men.

๐Ÿ‘‰  The singer recounts how his mother predicted that he would one day own a ship and sail the seas as a brave Viking. He would go on raids, fight enemies, and gain fame. This song radiates adventure and warrior spirit, making it a perfect fit for the rugged and heroic Viking culture! ⚔️

Musical performance and sheet music

Over the years, various musical interpretations of My Mother Told Me have emerged. The melody is often played on traditional instruments such as the lyre, nyckelharpa, or tagelharpa, but it also sounds powerful and captivating on modern instruments like the Harpika Kalyre.

Greensleeves

The Meaning and Origins of "Greensleeves"

"Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song, likely dating back to the second half of the 16th century. Its exact origins are uncertain, but it remains one of the most well-known melodies from the Renaissance and is still frequently played today.

Who Was "Greensleeves" Written For?

A persistent legend claims that King Henry VIII of England (1491-1547) composed the song for his second wife, Anne Boleyn. According to this theory, Henry VIII used this song to declare his love for her, but Anne rejected him. However, this story is unlikely, as the musical style of Greensleeves did not appear until later, and there is no direct evidence linking Henry VIII to its composition.

The lyrics describe unrequited love, with the narrator addressing a woman (possibly one with green sleeves) who has left him. This aligns with the theme of romantic sorrow.

What Does "Greensleeves" Mean?

The title refers to "green sleeves," which may have simply been a fashion trend of the time, as green clothing was popular in the Tudor period. However, some historians suggest that "greensleeves" could have had a symbolic or even suggestive meaning. In medieval times, green was sometimes associated with passion or infidelity, leading to speculation that the song could reference a courtesan or a woman of loose morals.

What Makes "Greensleeves" So Special?

  • Melody: The song is written in a minor mode (Aeolian or Dorian), creating a melancholic and timeless atmosphere.

  • Long history: The song has survived in various versions and was first officially published in 1580.

  • Christmas connection: In the 19th century, the melody was adapted for the Christmas carol "What Child Is This?", giving it additional recognition.

  • Many performances: It has been played on lutes, harps, guitars, and many other instruments, remaining popular in both classical and modern music.

Edelweiss ๐ŸŽถ

Some songs have a way of touching the heart, no matter how many times you hear them. Edelweiss is one of those timeless melodies that instantly brings a sense of peace and nostalgia. This beautiful song from The Sound of Music has always been special to me, and I wanted to see how it would sound on my Harpika.Kalyre

There’s something magical about Edelweiss. Its gentle melody and heartfelt lyrics make it a song full of warmth and simplicity. Originally written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, it symbolizes love and longing for home. Though it was composed for a musical, it feels almost like a traditional folk tune—one that could be passed down through generations.

I felt that the delicate tones of the Harpika Kalyre would complement this song beautifully, adding a soft and dreamy quality to the melody. The plucked notes seem to float in the air, emphasizing the simplicity and beauty of the piece.

Even though Edelweiss is a relatively simple tune, playing it on the Harpika Kalyre was a rewarding challenge. I experimented with different fingering techniques and rhythms to bring out its full expression. The instrument’s unique resonance gave the song a new character—soft yet bright, delicate yet warm.

I hope that in this version of myself, I was able to capture the soothing and nostalgic atmosphere of the song.

My Tuning Video Adventure ๐ŸŽฅ ๐ŸŽถ

So, I decided to make a tuning video. I mean, how hard could it be? Easy, right?
Well… not quite! Just pluck some strings, explain the notes, and voilร —done! Or so I thought...

The first challenge? Planning the video.
I quickly realized I couldn’t just pluck strings randomly and start filming, hoping for the best. That wouldn’t be very exciting. I needed a clear storyline, something that would make sense to viewers. So, I sat down, wrote everything out, and structured the video step by step.

Then came the voiceover. Now, here’s a fun fact about me: I really don’t like hearing my own voice. It always sounds weird—like, is that really me?! Instead of suffering through that, I decided to use an AI voice. First, I typed out my script, then let the AI do the talking. A brilliant plan… until I had to sync everything perfectly with the video. That was a whole challenge on its own!

With the voiceover sorted (I used this website, ElevenLabs), it was time for the real action: tuning the instrument. I carefully plucked each string, making sure the right notes matched what was being said. Sounds simple, but let me tell you, I had to re-record quite a few times because either my timing was off or I got distracted by something random—like one of my dogs suddenly deciding that now was the perfect moment to demand attention, or the cockatoo started with screaming. Even though I tried not to record him, you can still hear him screaming in the background every, now and then.

And of course, I couldn’t just leave the video like that. It needed something extra to make it a bit more polished. So, a little intro melody is added it to the beginning of the video. That tiny detail made it feel so much more polished!

In the end, was it fun? Yes! Was it easy? Not at all. Honestly, learning to play an actual song feels way simpler than making a video about tuning. But hey, every skill takes practice, right?

And now, after all that effort, my tuning video is finally ready! ๐ŸŽ‰ You can check it out here:
It’s also available on the "Where to start - tuning" page if you ever need it.

Hope you like it—happy tuning! ๐ŸŽถ

A Journey Through Strings: My Harpika Kalyre Adventure

There’s something magical about discovering an instrument you’ve never heard of before—like stumbling upon a hidden gem in the world of music. That’s exactly what happened to me.

Years ago, I dabbled with the harp, but it never quite stuck due to health issues. Then, in early January 2024, I came across something intriguing: an instrument with multiple names—Harpika, Harpica, Kalyre, Kalire, or Harpika Kalyre. I had never seen or heard of it before, but something about its unique shape and ethereal sound fascinated me. Without hesitation, I ordered one. When it finally arrived, I could hardly contain my excitement.

First Impressions:

Heavier Than Expected, But Full of Potential
Lifting the instrument out of its packaging, I was surprised by its weight. Heavier than I had anticipated, it felt solid and well-crafted, a true piece of musical artistry. However, a small voice in my head whispered doubt—would my hands, which sometimes struggle due to illness, be able to keep up? Would this be yet another instrument that I admired from afar, but couldn’t truly play?

Determined, I set my doubts aside and plucked my first notes. The sound was mesmerizing, though my fingers felt clumsy and unsure. Movements that looked effortless in demonstration videos were anything but when I tried them myself. It quickly became clear: while the Harpika Kalyre is often described as an easy instrument, mastering it—especially without a background in sheet music—was going to be a challenge.

From Frustration to Familiarity

At first, I struggled. Notes felt random, melodies refused to form, and my fingers didn’t move the way I wanted them to. But I kept going. Slowly, I started recognizing the relationship between the strings and their notes. I learned where each sound lived on my instrument and, more importantly, how to make them work together.

One thing I noticed early on was the brightness of the higher notes. They rang out sharper than I liked, almost piercing in contrast to the deeper, fuller tones of the lower strings. To balance this, I began working on control—training my fingers to strike the higher notes with a gentler touch while maintaining strength on the lower ones. It’s a delicate balance, but each day, I feel myself improving.

My Practice Routine: Finding Harmony in Repetition

To build consistency, I developed a routine. Every session starts with warming up my hands by playing scales. Not only does this help with flexibility, but it also allows me to listen carefully and determine if my instrument needs tuning. After warming up, I dive into my current challenge—right now, that’s Edelweiss. I take it slow, breaking the melody down piece by piece, repeating sections until my fingers begin to remember them on their own.

But I’ve learned something important: always end on a high note. If I finish my session with a difficult passage that I just can’t get right, frustration lingers. So instead, I wrap up my practice by playing songs I already know—melodies that flow easily and remind me of how far I’ve come.

What’s Next?

My journey with the Harpika Kalyre is just beginning. As I continue improving, I’m also exploring the technical side of the instrument—how to fine-tune it, how to adapt my playing style, and how to make it truly sing.

Welkom to My Harpika Journey

Welkom to My Harpika Journey

Thank you for visiting my site! Here, I invite you to join me on my personal journey with the Harpika. As I explore this unique instrument and expand my own knowledge, I want to share everything I discover with you. Information about the Harpika is scarce, and I hope to change that by creating a space where enthusiasts can find and exchange insights.

Years ago, I tried playing the harp and truly enjoyed it. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, I couldn't continue. However, the idea of playing music again never left me. In 2023, I decided to pick up an instrument once more. Living in a remote area, self-study was my only option. That's when I stumbled upon an instrument I had never heard of before - one with multiple names: Harpika, Harpica, Kalyre, Kalire or Harpika Kalyre.

Finding information about it was nearly impossible, and there were no clear guides on how to play it. Despite this, I was intrigued and decided to buy one in early January 2024, my Harpika Kalyre arrived, and I was beyond excited!

The instrument was out of tune, but luckily, I still had my harp books and tuner. I dusted off those old books, hoping they would help me navigate this new musical adventure. Tuning it was quite similar to tuning a harp, so that part wasn't too challenging.

However, playing it was another story. While it is said to be an easy instrument, I quickly realized that without a background in reading sheet music, getting a song to sound right was more difficult than expected. I had only taken a few harp lessons in the past, and playing by ear seemed like a fun method - until I heard myself play and realized it sounded noting like what I imagined in my head!.

For the first few months, I practiced daily with great enthusiasm. But soon, I hit a wall - not because I lost interest, but because I struggled to make real progress. Without proper sheet music or clear instructions, I had no idea where to find songs suited for my Harpika Kalyre. Eventually, I became discouraged, and my instrument ended up tucked away in the closet.

Yet, the thought of playing it never truly left me. That's why I decided to try again! This time, alongside playing, I also want to document my progress and experiences through this blog. My goal is to make more information available about this beautiful instrument - not just for you, but also for myself as a personal archive. I hope to track my learning process, share my progress, and inspire others to pick up the Harpika kalyre and enjoy playing it as well.
