The Harpika Kalyre Explained!

What is the Harpika Kalyre, you ask?

The first time I laid eyes on this instrument, I thought: It looks like a tiny harp! And I wasn’t far off. Many describe it as a cross between a lyre harp and a kalimba. Back then, I had never even heard of a kalimba, but as it turns out, there’s plenty of information about it.

The exact origins of the Harpika Kalyre remain a mystery. Some say it was created in China by a craftsman working for the Hluru company, while others claim an Iranian musician first brought it to life. One thing is certain: it’s a fascinating instrument with a unique charm. As I uncover more details about its history, I’ll be sure to share them!

Carved from various types of wood—such as maple, cherry, or sandalwood—the Harpika Kalyre is as beautiful as it is simple. Imagine a flat wooden board fitted with strings. Some models have a sleek, curved shape, while others keep a more traditional, flat design. Metal pegs hold the strings in place, and some versions include a sound hole for extra resonance.

Like harps and kalimba's, the number of strings varies. The smallest Harpika Kalyre has 17 strings, followed by models with 21 strings. Mine has 31, but there are versions with 34 or even 37 strings, depending on the maker. Despite these variations, they are all compact, lightweight, and easy to carry anywhere.

The sound? Absolutely magical. Warm, rich, and melodious like a lyre, yet gentle and clear, with a resonance all its own. Playing it is a joy—your thumbs do all the work, just like with a kalimba. Short nails are recommended for better control, and you can experiment by plucking softly or firmly to create different tones and effects.

Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned musician, the Harpika Kalyre welcomes you. You don’t need to read music—just follow your intuition and create soothing, meditative melodies or play your favorite songs. With this little gem, the possibilities are endless!
